Data Pen

2017

Data Pen is a prototype research tool for humanities data, designed and developed in collaboration between UTS and CESTA at Stanford University. Data Pen is primarily a drawing tool that creates a space for visual arrangement, definition and sense-making of historical relationships within a flexible node and link structure. The web application allows users—primarily humanities researchers—to access, explore, and manipulate multidimensional historical data (historical figures, places and objects) from existing archives/authorities or personal sources, and generate relational network graphs. The design team was responsible for prototyping and developing the architecture and interface of the web application in collaboration with a broader team at CESTA. More information can be found on the project website.
